Employer

A postdoctoral position funded for 34 months (A*MIDEX) is available in Dr. Mireille Ansaldi’s team at the Laboratoire de Chimie Bactérienne (LCB), a CNRS/Aix-Marseille University research unit located on the CNRS Campus in Marseille (https://lcb.cnrs.fr/team/ansaldi/). Through multidisciplinary approaches, the Phage group focuses on bacteriophages – viruses of bacteria – and the research is organized around three main axes: phage / bacteria interactions and regulatory networks integration, phage diversity and genomics, and phages as therapeutic and biotechnology tools. The group is well integrated in the international bacteriophage community and is a founding and active member of the Phages.fr network. The LCB Phages group has a strong background in fundamental and applied microbiology and is willing to integrate all these aspects in a dynamic way.

Position and assignments

A postdoctoral position funded for 34 months (A*MIDEX) is available in Dr. Mireille Ansaldi’s team at the Laboratoire de Chimie Bactérienne (LCB), a CNRS/Aix-Marseille University research unit located on the CNRS Campus in Marseille (https://lcb.cnrs.fr/team/ansaldi/). The applicant will adapt biosensor technologies previously developped within the team to build bacteriophage-based biosensors to detect a Gram positive human pathogen, Streptococcus agalactiae, involved in neonatal miningitis, in partnership with a local industrial entrusted with the development of a diagnostic kit with the phage-based biosensors.

The applicant activities within our resaerch laboratory include microbiology in a BL2 environment, isolation, characterization and genetic manipulation of bacteriophages and characterization of the phage-based biosensors thus developped.

The applicant will be in close relationship with the industrial partner to ensure the transfer of the phage-based biosensors in the industrial context.

Profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, scientifically independent and creative collaborator, who can contribute to a stimulating collaborative environment involving an academic and an industrial partner. To be eligible for this postdoctoral position, candidates must have completed their PhD within the last 0-5 years at the start of the contract. A PhD in Microbiology or Molecular Biology focused on genetics of Gram-positive bacteria is required. Prior research experience in one of the following areas would be a plus: Strepto B, bacteriophages or microbial bioinformatics. The candidate will have a particular desire for the valorization of research and project management in connection with the industrial partner, as well as the ability to conduct research independently, to report ongoing work, and the willingness to work and exchange within a team. The recruited profile will be external to the Aix-Marseille site and his/her last degree will have been delivered by a university other than AMU. Working language: English (French non mandatory).

Goals

The postdoctoral project aims at developing phage-based biosensors to detect the prevalent serotypes of Streptococcus agalactiae (Strepto B), a Gram-positive opportunistic pathogen involved in neonatal meningitis. This project is conducted in partnership with a major industrial player in microbiological diagnostics in charge of designing the diagnostic kit with the phage-derived biosensors developed during the project.
