Created in 1942, VTT is a contract research organisation under the domain of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. It employs approximately 2,700 persons, of whom more than a half are researchers.

The objective of the Technical Research Centre - VTT (Valtion Teknillinen Tutkimuskeskus in Finnish) is to develop new technologies, create new innovations and value added thus increasing Finnish industry competitiveness. Its activities cover the whole spectrum of technical research (information and communication technology, industrial engineering, biotechnology, energy…).

VTT proposes permanently trainee posts to students, theses and postdoc positions to young researchers as well as missions to more experienced researchers. There are also opportunities for part-time employment concurrent with student studies.The section "Careers", of the web site www.vtt.fi, gives you access to all opportunities and it is possible to apply on line.

At the VTT, personnel development seems to be a priority, and as a PhD student you can have support and advice from specialists for planning a career in research and development.
