Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

 

Poste et missions

How will you contribute?

You will actively participate to the thermoplastic composite behaviour experimental investigation, process-material-properties interrelationship identification and understanding, and contribute to the infrared welding process development in interaction with the structural composite teams and the project partner, a European aircraft manufacturer. The focus will be on the investigation of the main driven parameters assessment, responsible the welded interface quality, including the intimate contact generation, the interfacial healing as function of the thermal ageing and the interfacial crystallisation mechanisms at the welded area.

 

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Perform hands-on welding and characterization of high-performance thermoplastic composite based on infrared welding technology developed at LIST, propose/identify new experimental routes enabling to enhance the material behaviour understanding during welding, investigate /optimize the process window, and improve manufacturing strategies.
  • Thermoplastic (composite) behaviour analysis including surface analyses, thermal behaviour, crystallization kinetics
  • Characterize the induced properties of composite via various characterization techniques (e.g., static testing like SLS, GIC ILSS, thermal/environmental test, SEM, DSC, TGA, DMA, µ-CT, nano-indentation, µ-FTIR ).
  • Developpe experimental methods enabling generating reliable inputs for welding joint design and process qualification
  • Participate in proposal writing and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Present and report research results at the project meetings and national/ international conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational background:

 

  • You hold a PhD in polymer/ composite processing process engineering or materials science.

 

Required seniority:

 

  • Experience in high performance thermoplastic (composite) material characterisation (either mechanical testing or thermos-physical analysis)

 

Technical skills:

  • Experience in polymer (composite) material (thermos) mechanical testing
  • Experience in the field of thermoplastic processing, high performance polymer (PAEK’s family) or structure thermoplastic composite manufacturing/welding (Thermocompression, Stamping, Automated Tape placement, resistance/infrared/induction/ultrasonic welding)
  • A background in multi-material joining process, non-destructive testing, will be an asset
  • Collaborative skills, proactive, taking initiative, result oriented, good organizational skills and capacity to work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Good communication skills (oral and written)

Language skills:

  • Either English or French is mandatory.
