The CERMAV is a leading research center in the field of natural polymer. More specifically, the candidate will work in the team “Structure and Modification of Polysaccharides” which employs taylor made polymers and biomacromolecules to design innovative materials.

Description

Summary: Shape Morphing Hydrogels are materials that deform by swelling in contact with water. They have applications in soft robotics and tissue engineering. The aim of this project is to develop innovative hydrogel systems whose deformation is controlled by the association of a supramolecular complex. These original materials will be multi-stimuli responsive, as their deformation will be controlled by dissociating/associating the supramolecular complex using various stimuli (temperature, pH, RedOx).

This internship project will begin with the synthesis of monomers required for the fabrication of deformable hydrogels. Heterogeneous hydrogel systems will then be prepared using a photoreticulation method through a mask. The chemistry and preparation protocol will be optimized to create, within the same material, “active” zones capable of swelling in response to complex formation and “passive” inert zones. These systems will deform due to the heterogeneous swelling of the different zones. The deformation will be studied, particularly its dependence on temperature, system geometry, and mechanical properties.

Skills that will be acquired during the internship: This project will provide the student with hands-on experience in chemical synthesis, as well as the fabrication and characterization of polymers and soft materials, specifically hydrogels. The experimental work will include the synthesis of custom monomers, the preparation of complex hydrogel systems via photoreticulation, and the comprehensive physicochemical characterization of the resulting materials. A range of advanced techniques will be employed, including swelling studies, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical testing, optical microscopy, and computer-assisted image analysis.

Profile

The candidate should have strong theoretical knowledge in polymer chemistry and physical chemistry. They should be curious, creative, proactive in facing technical challenges, and interested in “smart materials.” Good writing skills and work organization are also essential for the successful completion of this project.
