Topic description
Large-scale long-duration energy storage technologies are required to enable the transition away from using fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. Organic Redox flow batteries (ORFBs) show great promise to solve the key challenge of the intermittent feature of renewable sources for grid-scale energy storage owing to their scalable energy and power density. Aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) have pioneered new routes for large-scale energy storage. The tunable nature of redox-active organic molecules such as nitroxide, anthraquinone and methylviologen derivatives provides a robust foundation for creating innovative AORFBs with exceptional performance.
We are seeking PhD candidates with proven experience in organic synthesis and multi-step synthesis. The successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative research environment to advance scientific projects involving energy storage in organic batteries. The applicant must have a solid training in organic chemistry and a passion for innovative and analytical thinking. In particular, the PhD student will be working on the rational design and synthesis of new nitroxides as organic redox electrolytes with improved performances. One major focus will be to control stereo-electronic effects driven their capacity fade and to explore new chemistries. This position is particularly well suited for Master students who wish to strengthen their experience in organic synthesis and energy storage.
There is a current high interest in industry to recruit PhD scientists with experience in energy storage and organic chemistry.
