Topic description

This PhD will examine, from a comparative perspective, a corpus of French and Italian poetry comprising texts from different poetic genres but united by their political purpose in the broadest sense, that is to say, linked to the public events of the period, which was marked by unprecedented political upheavals. It will examine the models, structures and hermeneutics of cultural memory in these poetic works, exploring the link between current events and representations of the past. By addressing a decisive period in European history, this research aims to provide a comparative study of memory discourse within the context of public life during a time of profound transformation. It will shed light on how the revolutionary and Napoleonic experience, as lived by the two neighbouring nations, is shaped by poetic discourse. A distinctive feature of this research is that it brings together two cultural domains that are often studied separately, yet are linked in many ways.
