L'histoire de la notion d'“impression” dans la philosophie moderne et contemporaine // The History of the Concept of “Impression” in Modern and Contemporary Philosophy

Souvent invoquée pour décrire l'expérience perceptuelle, la notion d'« impression » est encore en quête d'une élucidation philosophique. À mi-chemin entre la trace et l'illusion, l'impression renvoie dans le sens commun à une connaissance vague et imprécise. Le but du projet de thèse est de travailler sur la filiation de cette notion dans l'histoire de la philosophie, et plus précisément dans la philosophie moderne afin de comprendre comment telle notion est utilisée dans la philosophie contemporaine de l'esprit. L'impression est-elle une forme de connaissance perceptuelle ? Est-il toujours illusoire ? Est-elle toujours indéterminée ? Avons-nous des impressions dans le vide, ou bien nos impressions sont-elles toujours empreintes de nos expériences passées ?

L'objectif principal du projet de doctorat est d'étudier l'origine de cette notion dans la philosophie moderne afin de comprendre son histoire intellectuelle en prenant en compte les enjeux épistémiques d'une telle notion.

Le doctorat se déroulera en trois grandes étapes : a) un travail approfondi sur certains textes de philosophie moderne (à choisir avec les deux co-encadrantes) ; b) analyse conceptuelle de la notion d'impression ; c) application des éléments dégagés en a) et b) à l'usage de la notion dans la philosophie contemporaine de l'esprit.

Ce projet de doctorat s'inscrit dans le cadre de la chaire “La perception et ses liens avec l'imagination et la mémoire” et du projet “Pour une philosophie des premières impressions”, associé à la chaire. Le projet sera co-encadré par Marie-Frédérique Pellegrin (PU philosophie moderne) et par Joulia Smortchkova (CPJ Philosophie de la perception). Un.e chercheur.use postdoctorant.e sera aussi associé.e au projet pendant un an.

Often invoked to describe perceptual experience, the concept of “impression” is still awaiting philosophical clarification. Somewhere between a trace and an illusion, the impression commonly refers to a vague and imprecise form of knowledge. The aim of this dissertation project is to trace the lineage of this concept in the history of philosophy, and more specifically in modern philosophy, in order to understand how this concept is used in contemporary philosophy of mind. Is the impression a form of perceptual knowledge? Is it always illusory? Is it always indeterminate? Do we have impressions in a vacuum, or are our impressions always shaped by our past experiences?

The main objective of the doctoral project is to study the origin of this concept in modern philosophy in order to understand its intellectual history while taking into account the epistemic implications of such a concept.

The doctoral research will proceed in three main stages: a) in-depth study of selected texts in modern philosophy (to be chosen in consultation with the two co-advisors); b) conceptual analysis of the notion of impression; c) application of the findings from a) and b) to the use of the notion in contemporary philosophy of mind.

This doctoral project is part of the “Perception and Its Links to Imagination and Memory” chair and the “Toward a Philosophy of First Impressions” project, which is associated with the chair. The project will be co-supervised by Marie-Frédérique Pellegrin (Professor of Modern Philosophy) and Joulia Smortchkova (Research Associate in the Philosophy of Perception). A postdoctoral researcher will also be involved in the project for one year.
