Employer

The Assi Lab is part of the de Duve Institute, an international biomedical research center of the UCLouvain in Brussels. We investigate how the extracellular matrix (ECM) drives signaling programs that shape cancer cell behavior and adaptability. Our experimental approach combines CRISPR screens, 3D organotypic cultures, protein biochemistry and mouse modeling.

We offer an initial two-year postdoc fellowship, with possibility of renewal. Also, the candidate will be supported to apply for their own fellowship. You will have the opportunity to work on a multidisciplinary project and will be encouraged to think out-of-the-box. We aspire to create an inclusive and cooperative lab culture where everybody feels welcome, regardless of age, race, gender or cultural background.

Brussels is a cosmopolitan city promoting international science policies. The city offers access to affordable housing and excellent healthcare system

Position and assignments

We are looking for a motivated candidate to drive an ambitious research project investigating how the ECM regulates transcriptional (co)factor stabilization and related downstream responses in cancer cells.

This postdoctoral project builds upon our recent work (Assi et al. 2026, Cell ; PMID: 41702399)

In this role, you will:

  • Proactively contribute to new scientific ideas and experimental troubleshooting
  • Coordinate with the PI to guide project progression and set priorities
  • Design, perform and analyze experiments independently and in collaboration with the team
  • Have the possibility to supervise master’s students

Geographic mobility:

International

Starting date

2026-10-01

Profile

  • A PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular/Cellular Biology, or equivalent
  • International candidate who recently obtained their PhD outside Belgium
  • You did not work or reside in Belgium in the last two years
  • Strong interest in protein stability/degradation, the ubiquitin-proteasome system and cancer biology
  • Hands-on experience in protein biochemistry, cell culture and molecular cloning is essential
  • Adaptable, and curious to explore new scientific and technical areas as project priorities evolve
  • A good command of English (spoken and written) is essential
  • Ability to work independently and in a team is essential

Goals

One year from the start of the project, the postdoctoral candidate will be encouraged to apply for Belgian postdoctoral fellowships from at least one of the following organisms:

1) UCLouvain (3-year FSR fellowship),

2) The National Fund for Scientific Research (3-year chargé de recherche mandate)

3) The Belgian Foundation Against Cancer (4-year postdoctoral mandate)
