Description
Hydrogen has become a key element in developing decarbonised energy, and iron-based alloys, particularly steels, are the most widely used systems in industry. Consequently, it bears the highest potential to store or to transport hydrogen, owing to its nearly unlimited microstructure manipulation possibilities via adjustments to the chemical composition and the cornucopian range of thermomechanical processing routes that can be used. However, all microstructures suffer from a drop in ductility in the presence of hydrogen, a phenomenon called hydrogen embrittlement. Within the Materials Physics Group (GPM), recent studies have shown that hydrogen segregates at specific crystal defects (i.e., grain boundaries), modifying the failure mechanism where carbon is also enriched. Therefore, this six-month internship will aim to understand how the solubility of hydrogen and carbon evolves at specific grain boundaries with temperature. This will be done by conducting ab initio calculations of alpha-Fe
Sigma-5 (210) grain boundaries with hydrogen and carbon. In this context, a PhD thesis related to this internship is planned for October 2027 to study experimentally and numerically the effect of interstitial solutes on the solubility of hydrogen at crystalline defects in a martensitic steel.
Profile
The candidate must be a student in the final year of a Master’s program (Master 2) or an engineering school, specialising in materials science, metallurgy, condensed matter physics, or computational materials Science. They must possess a solid foundation in the thermodynamics of materials and crystal defects in metals and alloys. Prior training and knowledge in quantum mechanics, hydrogen-metal interactions, or the mechanical behaviour of materials is a significant asset. Computing skills in a Unix environment and using data analysis software (e.g., Python or MATLAB) are also desirable.
We expect the candidate to demonstrate strong scientific curiosity, rigour in the state of the art on the subject, and the ability to analyse complex phenomena by correlating the energy of a system with microstructural evolution from the literature. They must be methodical, organised, and autonomous, while also being comfortable working in a collaborative research environment. As this position paves the way for a PhD, the candidate must be motivated to
continue this research specifically by pursuing a doctorate starting in October 2027 on topics related to this internship by performing both experiments and simulations. Proficiency in English (B2 level) is also required.
