The Jean Jerphagnon Prize 2026

Organised by the SFO – French Optical Society, the Jean Jerphagnon Prize 2026 highlights applied research projects in optics and photonics with strong industrial and societal potential. Its objective is to accelerate the transfer of research-driven innovation to industry.

Created in tribute to Jean Jerphagnon, a leading figure in optics and photonics in France, the Prize underscores the importance of bridging high-level scientific excellence and technological innovation with tangible impact.

The Prize is awarded to a researcher, engineer, or scientific entrepreneur proposing an innovative project of high scientific value and significant industrial potential, incorporating at least one strong optics or photonics component.

Prize Objectives

Recognise innovative projects integrating a major optics or photonics component;
Highlight scientific and entrepreneurial talent;
Promote applied innovation and its transfer to industry;
Contribute to the dynamism of the French photonics ecosystem.

Since its creation, the Jean Jerphagnon Prize has catalysed breakthrough innovations. Several laureates and nominees from previous editions are now key actors in the sector, contributing to disruptive technologies and high-growth start-ups.

April–May 2026: pre-selection of applications and hearings of finalists before the jury

July 8, 2026: award ceremony during the Optique BFC 2026 congress in Dijon

Applicant Profile

The Prize is open to:

a researcher;
an engineer;
or a scientific entrepreneur.

Submitted work must demonstrate strong scientific value, clear industrial and societal potential, and include at least one optics or photonics component.

Jury and Partners

The selection is conducted by a jury chaired by Alain Aspect, 2022 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics, alongside leading figures from research and the photonics industry.

The Prize benefits from the support of major ecosystem partners, including Systematic Paris-Region, the French Academy of Technologies, CNRS, IMT Nord Europe, SEE, SFP, Optitec, Photonics Bretagne and Minalogic.
