The Humanities and Social Sciences: an essential asset in addressing major contemporary crises

Faced with the major transformations of our time — digital, ecological, social and democratic transitions — contemporary challenges increasingly arise where scientific knowledge, public decision-making, technological innovation and societal change intersect.

In these spaces of interaction between science and society, the humanities and social sciences play an essential role in:

  • understanding uses and practices;
  • analysing the social impacts of technologies;
  • supporting organisational transformations;
  • informing public policy;
  • and facilitating dialogue between researchers, decision-makers and citizens.

PhD holders in the humanities and social sciences therefore possess valuable skills to contribute to these dynamics: critical analysis, understanding of social systems, contextualisation of contemporary transformations, and support for change processes.

Through the testimonies of professionals with diverse career paths, this webinar will explore several concrete ways of working in roles located between science and society, in institutional, territorial, entrepreneurial and technological contexts.

Principle

To help identify and better understand the main non-R&D professions that recruit PhD holders, ABG launched in early 2021 a series of webinars for PhD holders and companies on non-R&D careers in which PhD holders can bring added value and thrive.

For this new edition, organised with the National Network of Houses for Social Sciences and Humanities (RnMSH), the aim is to explore several families of professions located between research and action in society. Through the speakers’ testimonies, participants will discover how the skills of PhD holders in the humanities and social sciences can be expressed in various professional contexts: companies, consulting firms, public institutions, or mediation schemes between research and society.

This webinar therefore aims to provide concrete reference points and examples of career paths, helping doctoral candidates and PhD holders better envision the diversity of careers accessible after a doctorate.

This event is for you if:

  • you are a PhD holder and would like to learn more about the various professions accessible to PhD holders in the humanities and social sciences, as well as the key skills expected in these roles;
  • you are a recruiter and would like to identify the skills PhD holders can bring to your organisation to support the development of your activities in France and internationally.

Programme and speakers

During this session, you will hear testimonies and advice from six speakers, all PhD holders or doctoral candidates in a humanities or social sciences discipline, with diverse career paths and roles at the interface between science and society, within different types of organisations:

Marianne HERARD - [Head of Scientific Programmes and Research Valorisation] at MSH Paris-Nord

After completing a PhD in anthropology and working as a researcher on fixed-term contracts, she joined MSH Paris Nord in 2016. As scientific adviser and research valorisation officer, her tasks are varied: managing calls for projects, supporting research activities, assisting project leaders, promoting research outcomes and mediation.

Julien MARY - [Scientific Adviser] at MSH Sud

Julien Mary is a PhD holder in contemporary history and a CNRS research engineer. Since 2015, he has been the scientific adviser of the House for Social Sciences and Humanities SUD (Eastern Occitanie). In this role, he has developed multiple areas of interest and expertise at the intersection of research, research coordination and research support. This career path has led him to define himself both as an intermediator — between researchers from different disciplines and between academic and non-academic actors — and as a historian whose fields and objects of research (interdisciplinary and participatory research, environmental history, history of memory) are informed by this work of intermediation.
