Humanities and Social Sciences: a key asset for addressing today’s major societal challenges

In the face of the major transformations shaping our world (digital, ecological, social and democratic transitions), contemporary challenges increasingly emerge where scientific knowledge, public decision-making, technological innovation and societal change intersect.

Within these spaces of interaction between science and society, Humanities and Social Sciences play a crucial role:

  • understanding social uses and practices;
  • analysing the societal impacts of technologies;
  • supporting organisational transformations;
  • informing public policy;
  • facilitating dialogue between researchers, decision-makers and citizens.

PhD holders in HSS therefore possess valuable skills to contribute to these dynamics: critical analysis, understanding of social systems, the ability to contextualise contemporary transformations and the capacity to support change processes.

Through the testimonies of professionals with diverse backgrounds, this webinar will explore several concrete ways of working in these science–society careers, across institutional, territorial, entrepreneurial and technological environments.

Overview

To help better identify and understand the main non-R&D careers that recruit PhD graduates, ABG launched in early 2021 a webinar series for PhD holders and employers focusing on non-R&D careers in which doctoral graduates can bring strong added value and build fulfilling careers.

For this new edition organised with the National Network of Humanities and Social Sciences Institutes, the objective is to explore several career paths located between research and societal action. Through the speakers’ testimonies, participants will discover how the skills developed during a PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences can be applied in different professional contexts: companies, consulting firms, public institutions or initiatives connecting research and society.

This webinar aims to provide concrete reference points and examples of professional trajectories to help PhD candidates and graduates better project themselves into the diversity of career paths available after a doctorate.

This event is for you if:

  • you are a PhD holder and would like to learn more about the different science-society careers accessible to Humanities and Social Sciences PhDs and about the key skills sought in these fields;
  • you are a recruiter and would like to identify how PhD skills can support the development of your activities in France and internationally.
