A budget of €45 million for 3 research centres CSET and a recruitment of 200 researchers, PhD students and others for the period of 2009-2013The Irish government has announced a funding of €45.7 million over 5 years for 3 research Centres for Science, Engineering & Technology (CSETs).
The CSETs are hosted by universities and aim to develop collaborations between public research and industry.
Through Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), the funding will focus on the areas of nutrition, nanotechnology and ICT.
Key organisation of the Irish Government's strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), SFI also provides grants for researchers from around the world who wish to relocate to Ireland.
The SFI CSET programme will be supplemented by an additional contribution from industry of €14.5 million, bringing the overall investment to over €60 million.
Furthermore, under the PRTLI (Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions), €300 million will support research in universities during the period of 2009-2013 (see our article dated March 5th, 2009).
€500 million will be also allocated to venture-capital funds for a period of 10 years in order particularly, to attract innovative overseas firms and boost R&D activity in Ireland.
