Topic description

France is the leading producer of sugar beet in Europe, and the Hauts-de-France region concentrates the majority of sugar beet cultivation. This crop is mainly affected by a phytopathogenic virus transmitted mostly by the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, causing the Beet Yellows Virus (BYV). The end of the use of neonicotinoids, insecticides with a significant impact on non-target insects such as pollinators, was decided by the EU in 2018. Therefore, it is urgent to seek for new alternatives to these insecticides by producing biomolecules with protective effects against aphid vectors of phytopathogenic viruses. Among the secondary metabolites identified in plants, flavonoid compounds provide pea protection against the green pea aphid. These molecules are extracted from coproducts of agri-food industry and can thus be valorized through a circular economy in the protection of sugar beet crops against aphids. The ProtecBet project proposes an original and exploratory study based on the valorization of natural biomolecules in order to protect sugar beet crops with minimal environmental impact by characterizing their potentially repellent, anti-appetitive or toxic effects against the aphid M. persicae.

Candidate's profile
We are seeking for an enthusiastic candidate, holder of a Master 2 or equivalent, in biology or physiology of plants and/or insects, and interested in a research subject potentially opening up to agronomic applications. He (she) will have to join a multidisciplinary team for the project requiring solid skills in biochemistry and molecular biology. Knowledge of biostatistics, plant cultivation and insect monitoring is advantageous.
