Topic description

Imbalances in the vaginal microbiota are common and promote the development of commensal pathogens such as S. agalactiae, which is responsible for neonatal infections transmitted from mother to newborn during childbirth. Current prophylactic measures rely on systematic intrapartum antibiotic administration for women carrying the bacterium in the vaginal tract, a practice that contributes to the emergence of resistant strains. The proposed approach aims to support the growth of the vaginal microbiota while inhibiting S. agalactiae through natural eutectic solvent (NES) matrices composed of prebiotics and microbiota-derived metabolites that help strengthen it. These NES will be transformed into solid eutectogels molded as vaginal suppositories to ensure optimal user comfort and prolonged retention.
