STEM in Europe: why are PhDs leaving research when the market has never needed them more?
(STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics — the scientific and technological disciplines strategic for Europe's future.)
The European Union lacks more than two million STEM professionals. Scientific and technical services are expected to create 2.6 million jobs by 2030 in Europe. The ecological transition, digital sovereignty, reindustrialization, and the rise of AI rely heavily on these scientific skills. And yet, a significant portion of young researchers leave academic research before or after their defense: more than 40% of postdocs eventually exit academia to reorient toward other sectors. Many do so for lack of stable prospects, sometimes at the end of careers marked by precarity, fatigue, and lack of visibility regarding their scientific future.
This paradox is far from anecdotal: Europe needs STEM talent at the precise moment when some of its best profiles cannot see themselves there.
