The laboratory of Prof. Oliver Schilling at the University Medical Center Freiburg has an open PhD position for using mass spectrometry-based proteomics, MALDI imaging, and bioinformatics for spatial mapping of perturbed proteolytic networks in acute, chronic, and fibrotic wounds.
The position is part of REMOD-HEALING, a doctoral network funded by the Horizon Europe Programme of the European Union. REMOD-HEALING is a research network of leading European and Latin American scientists from academia and industry, who want to tackle the burden of pathological wounds by exploiting therapeutic targets and biomarkers associated with extracellular matrix remodelling in cutaneous wounds.

•A 36 month sproject as Marie Sklodowska Curie trainee in one of the participating institutions
•State-of-the-art research in an international consortium
•Expert training in basic and applied research
•Research training periods in another consortium member's lab lasting from a few weeks up to three months, performed in a different EU country than the country where most of the project will take place
•Several summer/winter schools are also planned to strengthen doctoral students' knowledge in scientific fields, as well as in innovation and transferable skills (scientific communication, intellectual property, writing grant applications, etc.)

The Schilling Laboratory at the Institute of Pathology, Freiburg, focuses on translational and clinical proteomics, with particular expertise in terminomics, protease biology, and protein biomarker discovery. Its research aims to decipher proteolytic processing and protein termini dynamics in health and disease, bridging fundamental molecular mechanisms with clinically relevant applications. The laboratory has established a strong international track record, reflected by more than 200 publications and extensive expertise in innovative mass spectrometry-based workflows. By combining methodological innovation with clinical relevance, the Schilling Laboratory contributes to advancing precision medicine and next-generation proteome research.

Your qualifications:
•M.Sc. in Life Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Medicine, Pharmacy, or related fields)
•Initial knowledge in mass spectrometry-based proteomics or bioinformatics or MALDI preferred
•Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
•Fluency in English
•Applicants should not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to their recruitment date
