Les pratiques votives dans les sanctuaires chypriotes d'époque classique (VIe-IVe s. av. notre ère) // Votive practices in Cypriot sanctuaries of the Classical period (6th-4th cent. BCE)

Les sanctuaires chypriotes de l'âge du Fer ont suscité de nombreuses études portant sur leur statut et leur importance dans le maillage territorial des royaumes chypriotes, sur leur inventaire ou encore sur les spécificités de leur architecture. On compte aussi un certain nombre de publications monographiques : par exemple, pour la zone géographique qui nous intéresse, les sanctuaires de Kition-Bamboula et de Kition-Kathari, ou encore celui d'Apollon-Reshef à Idalion. Toutefois, dans tous ces travaux, la période classique (Ve-IVe siècles avant notre ère) est largement négligée.

Le.la doctorant.e étudiera les pratiques votives dans les sanctuaires chypriotes à l'époque classique, à partir de leurs traces matérielles : offrandes de types divers (notamment plastique), bases de statues et statuettes. Il s'agira de réfléchir aux types d'offrandes, ainsi qu'à leurs modes de consécration et à leur disposition dans l'espace. Une attention particulière sera portée aux bases (types, matériau, modes de fixation...). Le.la doctorant.e sera associé.e aux recherches conduites par les membres de l'équipe du programme ANR KIT-2 sur des lots de découverte ancienne conservés notamment en France (Louvre, BnF) et en Angleterre (British Museum). Il.elle aura également accès au matériel inédit de fouilles en cours.

Past studies focussing on Cypriot Iron Age sanctuaries concentrated on their status and importance within the territorial network of the Cypriot kingdoms, on their location and number, on the specific characteristics of their layout and architecture… We can also mention a series of monographic publications: for example, as far as our region is concerned, the sanctuaries of Kition-Bamboula and Kition-Kathari, or the sanctuary of Apollo-Reshef at Idalion. However, in all these publications, the Classical period (5th-4th cent. BCE) is largely neglected.
The recruited PhD student will study votive practices in Cypriot sanctuaries of the Classical period. He/she will especially scrutinize the material remains of these practices: votives (notably limestone sculpture and terracotta figurines), as well as statue bases. The study will establish a typo-chronology of the votives, the context of their consecration, and their spatial arrangement. Particular attention will be paid to the votives' bases (types, material, methods of attachment, etc.). The PhD student will work together with other members of the team of the ANR programme KIT-2 on votive assemblages found during legacy excavations and now stored in French museums (Louvre, BnF) and in the British Museum. He/she will also have access to unpublished material from ongoing excavations.

Le.a candidat.e devra avoir une bonne formation en histoire ancienne et archéologie, de préférence sur le Ier millénaire dans le monde grec et/ou en Méditerranée orientale. Il.elle aura une expérience du travail sur du mobilier archéologique, issu de fouilles et/ou conservé dans des musées. Une bonne connaissance de l'histoire et de l'archéologie de Chypre sera un plus.
The candidate must have a strong background in ancient history and archaeology, preferably focusing on the first millennium BC in the Greek world and/or the Eastern Mediterranean. They will have experience working with archaeological artifacts, whether from excavations or held in museums. A good knowledge of Cypriot history and archaeology would be an asset.
