How will you contribute?
You will act as the lead technical modeler within the infrastructure domain of Luxembourg’s national energy digital twin initiative (NCER-D2ET), joining a dynamic research team working on its development. Your work will focus on the modelling, simulation and analysis of multi-energy infrastructures (electricity, gas, heat, hydrogen) at multiple spatial and temporal scales. These infrastructures form the technical backbone of the digital twin platform and enable scenario-based assessment of system reliability, flexibility, decarbonization and investment planning. You will ensure that infrastructure models are fully interoperable with market and policy layers, enabling cross-domain simulations aligned with national transition objectives.
You will be mainly in charge of:
- Developing and implementing models of integrated energy systems, including electricity, thermal, gas and hydrogen infrastructures.
- Building multi-scale simulation frameworks, from national-level energy networks to local systems (districts, communities, buildings).
- Creating interoperable models responsive to external market and policy inputs (e.g. demand elasticity, incentives, regulatory constraints).
- Designing and executing large-scale simulation campaigns to evaluate infrastructure behaviour under future transition scenarios.
- Contributing to the design and implementation of intelligent scenario generators integrating socio-economic, environmental and technological factors.
- Collaborating with data scientists and IT engineers to structure simulation inputs and outputs within the NCER-D2ET data platform.
- Supporting the generation of key performance indicators (KPIs) to feed decision-making modules (e.g. security of supply, decarbonization goals fulfilment, infrastructure cost-efficiency, improving operational performance and reliability, etc.).
- Documenting and publishing methodologies and results through scientific publications, technical reports, and project deliverables.
Description
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.
You will join the Intelligent and Clean Energy Systems (ICES) research unit at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and will actively contribute to the NCER-D2ET (Data-Driven Energy Transition Digital Twin) project, a national strategic initiative to develop Luxembourg’s energy digital twin platform.
NCER-D2ET aims to design and implement an integrated, data-driven digital twin of the national energy system, capable of simulating and analyzing multi-energy infrastructures (electricity, heat, gas, hydrogen) across spatial and temporal scales. The project involves the modelling of energy infrastructures, the development of scenario-based simulations, and the generation of actionable indicators to support decision-making. You will be part of the team responsible for the infrastructure modelling domain, which serves as a technical foundation for interoperability with energy market simulations and policy evaluation tools.
