Description du sujet
Safran Spacecraft Propulsion (SSP) and Laboratoire de Physique des Plasmas (LPP) are offering to motivated candidates a PhD position with a topic in the field of electric propulsion. The PhD thesis is of experimental nature with the goal to develop a prototype of a compact system for monitoring the performance of Hall Effect Thrusters (HET) based on their optical signals. The work combines electrical and optical diagnostics, use of machine learning and prototype development. Context HET are electric propulsion devices (Figure 1) characterized by possibly the highest efficiency and thrust-to-power ratio among the various systems for satellite propulsion. This makes them a preferred choice for use in satellite constellations, on geostationary satellites and exploration probes for missions within the Solar system. Meeting the rising demands of the rapidly growing market requires pushing the boundaries of physics and engineering beyond their current limits and provides exciting field for personal advancement.

Work environment : The proposed topic is part of the research in the joint laboratory for studying Hall Effect Thrusters (COMHET).
COMHET unites the long-standing traditions in the development of electric propulsion systems for satellites of Safran Spacecraft Propulsion (SSP) with the academic and research experience of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Ecole Polytechnique, represented by the Laboratory for Plasma Physics (LPP). This combination provides unique environment for experiencing the best of both worlds – expert scientific supervision while working on the edge of technological progress in a fast growing and dynamic industrial setting.
Profil du candidat
The successful candidate will be hired on a CIFRE contract by SSP.
Requirements The successful candidate must hold a Masters degree or equivalent and be eligible for obtaining a security clearance under the French law.
Further, one or more of the following are needed: working knowledge of plasma physics, electrical propulsion systems (ideally HET), electrical engineering, plasma diagnostics (ideally spectroscopy).
Ability to work with Python or other language for data processing and working knowledge of French are an advantage but not required.
Good command of the English language verbally and in writing is required.
The work will be based in the premises of LPP at Ecole Polytechnique in Palaiseau but will include also visits to the SSP facilities in Vernon.
