PhD Opportunity — Barrande Fellowship Programme (Czech Republic – France): Smart Grids, IoT, AI & Renewable Energy Systems (CERTES – UPEC, France)

We are looking for motivated PhD candidates from the Czech Republic to join an international research mobility in France under the Barrande Fellowship Programme founding’s (cotutelle 5 month per year) or short-term mobility). The project focuses on Smart Grids, IoT-based building energy management, AI/Deep Learning, and Renewable Energy Systems.

Research Location:
UPEC – Université Paris-Est Créteil, CERTES Laboratory (Centre d’Études et de Recherche en Thermique, Environnement et Systèmes), a multidisciplinary lab specializing in energy systems, intelligent buildings, renewable energy integration, and data-driven energy management. Research will combine experimental work on real building testbeds, IoT sensor networks, and computational modeling.  https://www.certes-upec.fr/. Our French team is open to collaborations with Czech partners in all related research areas.

Research Scope (General):
We are open to collaboration in a broad range of research topics related to:

• Smart Grids and intelligent energy system management
• IoT applications for building and intelligent energy monitoring
• AI and Deep Learning methods for energy forecasting and optimization
• Renewable energy integration and flexibility services in electrical grid
• Data-driven approaches to building performance & energy efficiency
  + Any related topic proposed jointly with Czech partner supervisors

This flexible scope allows the candidate to propose specific research directions in consultation with the supervisors at CERTES and partner labs in the Czech Republic.

Candidate Profile:

• MSc in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, IoT/Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Renewable Energy, or related fields
• Skills in Python, machine learning, or energy simulation are valued
• Strong motivation for international collaboration and research publication
• Good level of English (French not required)

Funding & Mobility:

This position is intended to be supported through the Barrande Fellowship Programme (France ↔ Czech Republic).

• Co-supervision by CERTES (UPEC, France) + partner lab in Czech Republic
• Mobility up to 5 months per year in France, for up to 3 years (cotutelle track)
• Possibility of obtaining double PhD degree (France + Czechia)
• Funding is provided only upon acceptance of the Barrande dossier

This announcement is for a preliminary dossier submission aimed at applying for the Barrande Fellowship program of Czech Republic – France cientific cooperation. Participation in this process does not guarantee the award of the fellowship. Selected candidates will be invited to prepare a full application dossier for the Barrande Programme, which may lead to funding for a mobility period in France of up to 5 months per year, for up to 3 years. The final grant is subject to approval by the Barrande Committee.
